Chapter

Fourteen

Tasha

I’m trapped between a fire and an oven.

Not the worst place to be, honestly, because I’m nice and toasty after days of being chilled to the bone, not to mention the winter storm and the damn creek. If we make it out of here alive, I’m taking a very long vacation somewhere warm, where the sun shines all day long. Those aren’t the dreams I have in my head, though.

My dreams are filled with pain and darkness and more pain piled on top like whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. They’re with Edmund’s sneer and Mae’s laughter and Carmen kissing that creep and letting him touch her. Carmen telling me about her time in the dungeons and everything that’s happened to her.

My dreams are nothing but torture heaped onto hell, and I’m actually grateful to wake up in Reid’s arms. I stretch, the last of my sleep leaving me like sand out of an open fist.

A massive hand falls over my rumbling stomach, and right as I’m about to bite the head off whoever it belongs to, a wave of calm rushes over me. Not from my own mind, either. This is no self-soothing.

It’s Reid.

“Don’t move.” His low murmur sounds close to my ear, and I shiver against him. “Let me hold you for a little longer while we have time.”

I press my ass back against him, but before I have a chance to get all hot and bothered, Julius belches from in front of me, the sound followed by Liam’s groan, and the oven at my side turns over, snuggling closer.

“It’s a puppy pile,” I whisper. “You’ve put me right in the middle of the pile!”

“Are you mad about that?” Reid asks.

“No. Just hungry. Think one of the puppies will be able to go out and catch us something to eat? I’ll settle for a squirrel.”

I’d settle for anything, to be honest, because my body is running out of options. Between the four of us, we’ve already cleaned out the rest of the cans in the cabin, and those peaches are long gone now.

“Do you send your emotions into everyone or is it just me?” I ask.

“It’s just you. It’s a mate thing,” he replies. “You’re able to feel me just as I’m able to feel you, if only you let the walls between us fall away. It’s been horrible, locked out of your mind and emotions. I don’t know the best way to take care of you.”

“I’m not sure if I actually like the thought of you knowing my mind and emotions or not. It might come in handy in a fight, but I feel like I stay mad at you too often for this to be a good thing.”

“It might help us to get in the house, if you’re wondering about how we’re going to pull it off.”

“Worrying, yes,” I say.

Reid groans and shifts away from me. “There has to be other ways into the house. My brothers are right about that point. If Edmund has been sneaking in and out for years, then I guarantee he’s not using the tunnel in the basement.
